University of Ottawa Ernest Gagnon Scholarship
INTRODUCTION
This fund was created in honour of musician and author Ernest Gagnon. Mr. Gagnon was one of the first to gather, write out and publish the music and lyrics of French Canadian folklore popular songs that have been passed down from generation to generation, the foundation of the Nouvelle-France to the end of the 19th century.
PURPOSE OF FUND
bring back important elements of french folklore music from l’Acadie, Québec, other parts of Canada and Lousiana into today’s contemporary popular or classical music.
In good time, the School of Music will make every effort to promote the Purpose of the Fund.
SCHOLARSHIP DETAILS
Eligibility Criteria
The applicant must:
1. be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, a person with the protected/refugee status or an international student;
2. be registered in an undergraduate or master’s program in music, with the musicology or theoretical (composition or history) option; and
3. focus on composition and/or production of popular or classical music inspired by French folkloric music of America.
Note : Should no applicant be eligible according to the purpose of the fund and the third eligibility criteria, the scholarship can be awarded to a student focusing on the composition and/or production of music from francophone composers.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Applications must be made through Online Scholarships and Bursaries, which can be accessed through the uoZone portal, and should include a one-page description of the applicant’s research project on the French Canadian musical traditions.
